    2010 Sertoma Duck Race

In 2010, Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma, an organization with a history of successful public fundraising events took on their latest challenge, the Ozark Duck and Kinetic Kontraption Race.  The event had 9 years of history under its belt.  Although, due to many factors the event was halted in 2009 by the Ozark Parks Department (who hosted the event at the time).  HOTO felt like the event was worth reviving and saw a great opportunity for continuing their mission of helping kids in the area.  With little time to plan the event, the HOTO “Duck Race Planning Committee” got to work fast to organize an great event that would benefit Care to Learn (Ozark and Nixa chapters).

The 2010 event took place on July 23 & 24th, in summer heat that seemed to stay constant around 99 degrees the entire weekend.  The event had the perennial favorite “rubber duck race” where over 2,700 rubber ducks were adopted by willing owners for a chance to win their part of cash prizes totaling $5,000, the car and truck show on Friday night hosted about 25 participants, the event stage was full the entire weekend with several local bands, LifePoint Church and the MO National Guard were on hand to entertain swarms of children at the LifePoint KidZone, and who could forget the “Minute to Win It” games, pie eating contest and mule jumping exhibition.  However, with a lack of planning time HOTO had to put a hold on bringing back the ever enticing Kinetic Kontraption Race.

In the end, HOTO had its first Duck Race under their belt.  Successes were abundant as they calculated the entertainment value, public perception, and the many lessons learned from running an event the first time.  Yet, financially, the event fell short.  Even still, HOTO determined they went into the event with the hopes of supporting “Care to Learn”, and they would honor their commitment to the organization with a $10.000 gift.  All the while, intending to be back in 2011 to improve what needed improving and build on the foundation set forth in the first year running this great event.
